Supervisor: Conservator/Conservation Lab Supervisor

Summary: Located in Nashville, Tennessee, the Tennessee State Library & Archives is the official repository for the permanent state records of Tennessee and collects privately donated materials that provide insight into the lives of Tennesseans and the history and culture of Tennessee. The Library & Archives is committed to the preservation and accessibility of the materials in its collections and encourages and promotes library and archives development throughout the state, including guidance on preservation. The Library & Archives has 554,888 records in its catalog, including approximately 33,000 cubic feet of archive materials. All Tennesseans have access to our online repositories and catalog, and anyone can research on-site with a Library & Archives library card.

The Conservation Technician supports the preservation of the Library & Archives’ collections by performing light conservation treatments, carrying out preventive care efforts including environmental and pest monitoring, and creating custom enclosures. The position reports to the Conservator/Conservation Lab Supervisor and is within the Archival Collection Services section of the Library & Archives.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Performs a variety of tasks in the conservation lab following established procedures and standards. These tasks include examination and documentation, before and after treatment photography, fastener removal, surface cleaning, humidification and flattening, mending, rehousing, and constructing custom enclosures and exhibit supports.
  • Handles all collection materials carefully and in a manner consistent with established policies and best practice.
  • Writes condition reports and treatment proposals.
  • Records accurate statistics and documentation on work performed.
  • Performs other duties in support of the conservation lab, including cleaning/tidying and routine maintenance procedures.
  • Participates in team projects, assisting with condition surveys, inspection for pest activity, emergency preparedness, and emergency response.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. A degree in history, art, chemistry or other related field will be given preference.
  • Two years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Able and interested in learning techniques and procedures required in a conservation lab setting.
  • Collaborative, adaptable, and flexible.
  • Able to perform repetitive work tasks with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Careful and safe handling of sharp tools and operation of heavy equipment (board shears, book presses).
  • Careful and safe handling of collection items.
  • Able to analyze and solve problems.
  • Able to lift at least forty (40) pounds.
  • Knowledge of general office procedures.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work collegially.
  • Assist the organization in creating a safe and healthy working environment by working safely with the equipment provided.
  • Follow instructions given for health and safety purposes and immediately report unsafe working practices or hazardous working conditions.
  • Protect the collections from loss, damage, or theft.
Working Conditions:
  • Exposure to dust and mold possible.
  • Some tasks may involve exposure to dust, mold, or light organic solvents requiring the use of a respirator and other personal protective equipment.

Salary: $45,000 annually plus the State of Tennessee Benefits package.
