Supervisor: Director of Communications

Location: The Communications Internship is located in Nashville, Tennessee. The internship will require a candidate who will report in-person to the office. Candidates should be available Monday through Friday. Depending on the assignment, interns may have the opportunity for limited travel during the summer. Typical travel is in the Nashville area; however, some opportunities may allow for travel to other parts of Tennessee.

Summary: The Communications Internship will provide an opportunity to work collaboratively with the Secretary of State’s Communications Team, and regularly work with Office leaders and staff. The intern will participate in a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, writing; researching; developing high-quality materials and messages; supporting the Office’s social media platforms; assisting with photography and video projects; answering and responding to Office inquiries and copyediting.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Researching, creating, updating and posting online content, including news and updates, infographics, and social media graphics
  • Writing, proofreading, fact-checking, and editing communications materials
  • Drafting news releases, media alerts, and other external communications materials
  • Conducting research related to major projects, promotional campaigns, or events
  • Publishing content
  • Assisting in video production
  • Participating in ad hoc projects and tasks as needed
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Currently attending higher or professional education, including college, university.
  • The ideal candidate will be a junior, senior, or graduate student working toward a bachelor’s degree (B.A.) or higher in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English or a related field.
  • Prior experience in a professional setting and a connection to Tennessee is preferred.
Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of media and public relations, either through coursework or employment experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Project management experience
  • Self-motivated and driven to speak up and share new ideas
  • Comfortable interacting with, and interviewing, new people
  • Ability to manage time effectively
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and internet research tools
  • Experience with photography, video, graphic design, and Canva a plus
Expectations:
  • Dedicated, hard work ethic. Self-starter. Prioritize work responsibilities during work hours and complete daily assignments as expeditiously as possible, keeping distractions to a minimum.
  • Reliable attendance. Prompt arrival at the office to begin work on time. Working diligently throughout the entire day, to complete all expected hours of work according to one’s agreed schedule.
  • Professional attire that reflects the professional atmosphere of the office per Secretary of State policy.
Salary: This is a part-time role with hourly compensation.
